President's Message

The Japan Academy of Community Health Nursing was founded in October 1997 as a voluntary organization and transitioned to a general incorporated association in 2014. After more than 25 years, a new board structure for the 2023–2024 term began in June 2023.

This academic society initially defined “community health nursing” in 2014. However, due to expansion in the diverse subjects, settings, and methods of community nursing practice as well as the need to clearly redefine “community health nursing” as a core discipline for all nursing professionals, a redefinition was undertaken in 2019.

In our framework, “community health nursing” is positioned as a fundamental discipline that develops the essential knowledge and skills required by all nursing professionals, including public health nurses, midwives, and registered nurses. Its goal is to enhance quality of life and to contribute to building the safe, healthy communities that support quality of life. Community health nursing is described as a practical science that continuously and comprehensively addresses the lives of people at various health levels in diverse settings, exploring effective nursing practices through collaboration with individuals and communities.

Community health nursing involves ongoing, comprehensive activities grounded in the local community, covering a broad range of subjects, nursing activities, and collaborative efforts with various individuals. This approach is distinguished by its extensive and diverse scope regarding subjects, time, space, and activities as well as its inclusivity.

In the board meeting for this term, we plan to clarify the concept of “community health nursing” as well as the characteristics of our society through collaboration with academic organizations from related fields. We also plan to evaluate the future direction of the society. Additionally, the members of our society include a high proportion of educators and researchers. We aim to enhance academic activities through journals, conferences, and seminars, with the goal of making our society even more engaging.

We appreciate your continued support and cooperation in advancing the academic development of community health nursing and improving both education and practice.

For those considering membership, we warmly invite you to join our society. We look forward to collaborating with you on a wide variety of stimulating academic activities.
